Madam Mayor, Dear Administrative Council of Carouge, Dear friends, colleagues, family and apprentices.
I’m very happy and touched to receive the Carougeois Merit, which also honors the craftsmanship and invaluable know-how that have animated Carouge for centuries.
As fate would have it, I was born on the banks of the Arve in Carouge, where there were 13 tanneries in the 18th and 19th centuries, and where our town had a reputation that attracted many leather craftsmen.
Carouge was a major trading center for skins and a crossroads for trade between Lombardy, Savoy and the German-speaking regions.
33 cobblers had set up shop there, shaping this noble material for everyone’s daily needs.
